About Mike Maloney

Mike Maloney is a multi-award winning photographer based out of London, Ontario.

Specializing in “catching life as it happens,” Mike was given his first camera — a Pentax K1000 — while still in high school and has been shooting ever since. He opened his first studio in the early 80s, concentrating mainly on family portraits, weddings, children’s photos and custom darkroom work. It wasn’t long until his focus moved towards commercial and event photography. Inquisitive by nature, a chance opportunity with a local newspaper allowed him to see his work “hot off the press,” and was instrumental in a shift to journalism.

Since catching the photo bug 40+ years ago, Mike’s body of work has covered the gamut from shooting passport photos to World championship sporting events. In addition to hanging on the walls of clients’ homes, his photos have also appeared in a variety of print media ranging from newspapers to corporate reports and specialty publications. His photographs from London’s St. Patricks Day Riot in 2012 were used extensively by media outlets around the world with one photo in particular earning recognition as News Photo of the Year by the CBC.

While no longer hanging his hat in the newsroom every day, Mike can often still be found out chasing sirens in the wee hours of the night or poking about under the cover of darkness working on his Finding The Light photo series. Seldom without a camera close at hand, his passion for the art of photography remains strong. Whether it’s rambling around on back roads in search of that elusive burst of sunshine across a farmer’s field or hanging over the boards at the rink, Mike continues to explore and document life through the lens.
